Frequently Asked Questions

What is Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)?

Traditional Chinese Medicine is an ancient, complex holistic form of healing which combines acupuncture, Chinese herbs, Chinese Dietary therapy, Tuina (Chinese bodywork), and meridian exercises (Tai chi or Qi Gong).  It is a sophisticated form of medicine which has been practiced for thousands of years in many Asian countries.  According to TCM, health and wellbeing is dependent upon the smooth flowing of the body’s life force energy, Qi.  Illness, pain, and imbalance occur when Qi flow is obstructed and hindered.  TCM does not view health as the absence of disease but as a harmonious wellbeing of body, mind, and spirit.

Does acupuncture hurt?
No, acupuncture should not hurt. A momentary prick is often felt around the needle as it is inserted, eventually creating a dull pressure or tingling around the area during the treatment. Most people are amazed by how relaxed they feel during and after the treatment. This can only occur if the treatment is comfortable and gentle.

Is acupuncture safe?
As long as it is performed by a competent practitioner, acupuncture is extremely safe. Acupuncturists are required to use disposable needles that are discarded after one use.

How many treatments will I need?
This is unique to the individual. It depends on the condition, age, how long you’ve had it, severity, etc.  For most chronic conditions, 5-7 treatments on a weekly basis tend to offer the best outcome. Some people notice an immediate improvement in their health while for others acupuncture tends to have a cumulative effect over several visits.

Does the clinic offer Chinese herbs? If so, what kind?
Yes, we have access to an extensive Chinese herbal pharmacy that offers herbal formulas in the form of tinctures, tea, powder, and pill.  We may provide herbs that can be taken internally or externally as a soak, poultice, ointment, or lotion.

Are Chinese herbs safe?
Herbs used at Soft River Acupuncture are cGMP certified.  When prescribed by a well-trained professional Chinese herbal medicine is safe with little to no side-effects.  Unlike Chinese herbs, Western pharmaceutical drugs usually have many side-effects (some severe).  Although they work more gradual compared to the fast-acting Western drugs, Chinese herbs work with a person’s body and produce long-lasting effects.
